Local Stories that Power a National Movement

Movement Voter Project

Rarely do people get to witness the transformative power of democracy at the ground level. In the days leading up to the 2019 election in Pennsylvania, we captured grassroots organizing in action.

Movement Voter Project (MVP) connects donors to local groups that both mobilize voters and build long-term power for the progressive movement.

MVP wanted to create a fundraising video featuring the different organizations they support, canvassing and advocating on the ground, to show donors that investing in MVP means investing in progressive change for the 2020 general election and beyond.

Block by Block embedded with 3 grassroots groups in the Philadelphia area and followed them as they hit the pavement, knocked on doors, handed out fliers, and talked to voters in the days before Election Day.

We interviewed first-time canvassers from MILPA (Movement of Immigrant Leaders in Pennsylvania) who were informing people on the need for driver’s licenses for undocumented workers.

We followed around formerly incarcerated folks working with CADBI (Coalition to Abolish Death by Incarceration) as they made sure people got out to vote for District Attorney candidates who embraced justice reform.

We also captured the power-building work of the Working Families Party as they successfully elected a third-party candidate to the Philadelphia City Council for the first time in 70 years.

The Block by Block team captured all of these stories in the five days leading up to Election Day.

In a short amount of time, we coordinated with the canvassers, put together a film schedule, and worked with locals to film the different groups simultaneously.

Base-building is what it takes to win an election. Movement Voter Project invests in groups that don’t just work on behalf of historically marginalized communities, but are led by people from those communities.

It’s more important than ever to capture stories that show that true progress is possible when grassroots leadership gets the support they need.
